In collaboration with Home of Hope, Renske is responsible for a project in a slum in Kampala. Here, disabled children who live at home are helped with physiotherapy, guidance and medication. Together with a social worker, home visits are made every week to see what the situation is like, whether there has been any improvement, and to assess where extra help is needed. A physiotherapist also comes every month to teach the family which exercises they can best do with the child. In addition, we look at how the environment can also be involved, together with local leaders in the slum. In Uganda, many people see a disabled child as a curse, which means there is a lot of stigma towards these children and their families. By involving neighbors and others in their lives, we hope this will change.
